The Universities Fund (UF) was established by Section 53 of the Universities Act,2012 of the laws of Kenya. The main mandate of the Universities Fund is to provide funds for financing universities in Kenya. The Universities Fund shall hold a national conference for University Education Funding in Mombasa at Pride Inn Flamingo Beach Resort from 23rd to 24th February 2023. The conference shall be graced by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of the Ministry of Education. The theme for the conference is, “Universities for a Sustainable Future”.
The targeted participants include a broad range of stakeholders with an interest in higher education such as government policymakers responsible for higher education, university authorities, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and entities active in the higher education field.
It is expected that the forum will achieve the following:
- Concurrence on the proposed funding framework (reviewed Differentiated Unit Cost model) and strategies to ensure its effective implementation.
- Develop a common approach with stakeholders to address current university funding gap challenges.
- Initiate and develop strategic partnerships, linkages and resource mobilization techniques and networks amongst key stakeholders in university education financing; and
- Generate materials to be used as a reference for further engagement on the topic of university sustainable financing.
The Universities have been financially strained due to low funding from the government which has affected their operations. Therefore, the Universities Fund targets to congregate the university fraternity, government agencies in the university sub-sector, the National Treasury, development partners and the private sector to forge sustainable financing for universities in Kenya.
